| Alice Springs (576 meters or 1,900 feet) is the
second-largest town in the Northern
Territory and is known as Mparntwe to the Arrernte people, who
have lived in the central Australian desert for more than 50,000
years. The town is located nearly in the geographical center of
Australia and is a thriving, modern community of 28,000 people.
The name 'Alice Springs' comes from a waterhole located three kilometers
north of the present town which was names after Alice Todd, wife
of Superintendent of Post and Tepegraph Sir Charles Todd.
The town is a showcase of a range of large scale working solar
installations. The Desert
Knowledge Australia Solar Centre is a $3.1M initiative that
showcases a range of solar power technologies in commercial-scale
installations.

Alice Springs may be remote, but there are plenty of ways to arrive.
Qantas and Tiger
Airways have daily flights to Alice Springs. Train travel is
available via the
Ghan from Adelaide
and Darwin.
