PARKS
In 2006 Australia celebrated the century milestone of the Kosciuszko
National Park. On December 5, 1906, the government of New
South Wales protected an area of 300 square kilometers around
Mount Kosciuszko and called it the National Chase Snowy Mountains.
It was the first alpine reserve in NSW. The Kosciuszko State Park
was declared in 1944 and the national park in 1967.
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
In Australia, decisions are primarily based on the Environment
Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act which was introduced
in 1999. This act has a number of objectives, among them the promotion
on biodiversity and conservation.
It replaced the World Heritage Properties Conservation Act which
was passed to stop the Gordon below Franklin dam in Tasmania in
1983.
