The Gold Coast is located in the southeast corner of Queensland, to the south of Brisbane, the state capital. Best advice ... learn to surf or get a tan. With 60 kilometers (38 miles) of beautiful coastline from Beenleigh to Coolangatta on the border of New South Wales, the Gold Coast is a popular holiday destination.

With a population of more than a half million people, Gold Coast City is the second most popuated city in the state and the seventh most populous city in the country.

NATURAL WORLD

The Gold Coast offers city-by-the-surf action in a sunny subtropical climate. Popular beaches include Coolangatta, Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise.

TOURISM INDUSTRY

In the late 1950s and 60s, the development of the City's beach strip was rapid. Holiday houses, motels and guesthouses were built to capture the fun and holiday atmosphere.

Plans are underway to make Gold Coast the country's top destination for businesses conferences. According to the Gold Coast Bulletin, Australian business tourism, comprising meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions, is a $17.36 billion industry.

The suburbs of Southport and Surfers Paradise form the Gold Coast's commercial center.

NEARBY

To the west, the city is bordered by a part of the Great Dividing Range commonly referred to as the 'Gold Coast hinterland'. Part of the mountain range is protected by Lamington National Park and has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in recognition of its outstanding geological features displayed around shield volcanic craters and the high number of rare and threatened rainforest species. The area is popular with bushwalkers.

Tweed Heads and sections of Beaudesert are also commonly referred to as part of the Gold Coast region.

VISITING?

TRANSPORTATION -- Gold Coast Airport (code: OOL) is also known as Coolangatta Airport.

Locally, north-south transportation is a simpler task than travelling east and west by public transport.
