In the late 1950s and 60s, the development of the City's beach
strip was rapid. Holiday houses, motels and guesthouses were built
to capture the fun and holiday atmosphere.
Plans are underway to make Gold Coast the country's top destination
for businesses conferences. According to the Gold
Coast Bulletin, Australian business tourism, comprising meetings,
incentives, conventions and exhibitions, is a $17.36 billion industry.
The suburbs of Southport and Surfers Paradise form the Gold Coast's
commercial center.
NEARBY
To the west, the city is bordered by a part of the Great Dividing
Range commonly referred to as the 'Gold Coast hinterland'. Part
of the mountain range is protected by Lamington National Park and
has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO
in recognition of its outstanding geological features displayed
around shield volcanic craters and the high number of rare and threatened
rainforest species. The area is popular with bushwalkers.
Tweed Heads and sections of Beaudesert
are also commonly referred to as part of the Gold Coast region.
