The Northern Territory covers about one-sixth of the Australian continent with an area of 1.35 million square kilometers. The well-known monolith, Uluru (Ayers Rock), 348 meters high, is near the southwest corner of the Territory.

Darwin is the capital. Other sizable settlements are Alice Springs in the desert and Katherine near the base of the Top End.
