FLICKR ALBUM: Queensland

Townsville is located on the northeast coast in the state of Queensland. It is Australia's largest tropical city.

NATURAL WORLD

Surrounded by tropical rainforests and the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Townsville is a cosmopolitan city in the dry tropics. It has a population of 170,000.

Castle Hill is a huge pink granite monolith standing in the heart of the city.

Magnetic Island is just 20 minutes from the city centre by fast catamaran ferry, or 40 minutes by car ferry if you wish to take your own vehicle. Here, more than 2,000 koalas roam free in an idyllic tropical setting offering superb views, palm-fringed beaches, a wide variety of accommodation and plenty to see and do, including bush walks to inspect World War II fortifications.

SPORTS

The North Queensland Cowboys are a professional rugby league team which plays home games at Dairy Farmers Stadium, 15 kilometers northwest of Townsville in Thuringowa.
