ABORIGINAL VICTORIA

Aboriginal life is vibrant in Victoria home to more than 30 Aboriginal language groups. Victorian Koories are proud guardians of ancient traditions and look forward to sharing their history with you. Join them on guided tours and interpretive walks. Visit art galleries and cultural centers. Taste bush foods in restaurants, markets and straight from the source and hear about a strong connection with spiritual ancestors and the land.

The first ski tracks were not created for recreation but for miners getting to work.

TOURISM INDUSTRY

Victoria's Nature-based Tourism Strategy 2008-2012 (2.83mb PDF) is the first major inter-agency strategy for nature-based tourism and has been jointly funded and guided by Tourism Victoria, Parks Victoria and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE). The development of the strategy was driven by the need to provide a coordinated and strategic approach to policy, planning, sustainable development and marketing of the nature-based tourism sector.

The South Gippsland area around Koo Wee Rup in Victoria is the asparagus capital of Australia. More than 90 percent of Austraia's asparagus comes from this area. Prior to European settlement the area was occupied by the Bunurong Aboriginal people. It is from their language that the town's name derives - 'ku-wirup' allegedly meaning 'plenty of blackfish' or 'blackfish swimming'.
