Montreal is located on an island at the confluence of the Saint
Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers.
HISTORY
Originally called Ville-Marie ('Mary's City'), Montréal
would take its current name by the end of the 17th century from
the French Mont Royal ('Mount Royal'), the name of the hill
at the heart of the city.
