COSTA RICA FORUM

COSTA RICA - There is only one reason to visit the small town of Tortugero, and that is to see turtles up close and in their own backyard.

FYI - This document is a new feature. Editorial suggestions are welcome.

Located on the Northern coast in the Limón Province, Tortugero is the largest nesting area in the Western Hemisphere for the green sea turtle.

TURTLES

Green Turtles - Nesting season is from July to mid-October.

Leatherback Turtle - Nesting season occurs from April to June. Also, a word about leatherbacks. Unlike green turtles, leatherbacks do not return to the same beach where they hatch.

NATIONAL PARK

Tortugero was declared a national park in 1970.

FIELD STATIONS

There are two biological stations, the Cano Palma Biological Research Station and the John H. Phipps Biological Field Station. During nesting season, guided turtle walks can be arranged.
