| Oslo is the capital and the financial
and cultural center of Norway.
NATURAL WORLD
Oslo occupies the northernmost end of the Oslofjord and is surrounded
by green hills and mountains. There are 40 islands within the city
limits. Two thirds of the city lie in protected areas of forests,
hills and lakes. There are many parks in the city. During winter
it is fairly common to see wild moose.
CULTURAL WORLD
Oslo offers more than 50 museums and many art galleries. Amongst
the world-famous attractions are the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the
Viking Ship Museum, and the Munch Museum.
HISTORY
According to the Norse sagas, Oslo was founded by King
Harald Hardråde around 1049. Archaeological research uncovered
Christian burials dating before 1000, which prompted the celebration
of Oslo's millennium in 2000.
