MEXICO --San Cristóbal de las Casas is one of the obligatory stopping points on the "Gringo Trail."

WHERE TO EAT

La Casa del Pan, serves whole-grain breads and tasty vegeterian cuisine. This is one of our favorite restaurants in the country! Owner Kippy Nigh -- author of A Taste of Mexico -- says that more than 90% of the ingredients are locally produced.

La Selva Café, Crescencio Rosas #9. Serves internationally certified organic coffee in a coffeeshop that is usually clean, even by the high standards of San Cristóbal. The store has a rack of the most recent newspapers and magazines. The coffee is produced by a group of coffee growers in Chiapas called Cafes Orgánicos de Chiapas.

El Caldero, Avenida I. Allende #5A and Avenida Insurgentes #5A. Filling soups and vegetarian entrees. Closed Wednesday.

Pizzeria El Punto, Comitan #13, El Cerrillo. Excellent Italian-style pizza. Closed Monday.

WHERE TO STAY

Posada Vallarta, Hemanos Pineda #10, Located three blocks from the Cristóbal Colón bus station, this is one of the cleanest and well-managed hotels in Mexico.

Le Gite del Sol. Economical hostel with dorm-style and private rooms. English, French spoken. Kitchen for guests' use.

Sol y Luna. Bed and breakfast close to everything in the charming El Cerrillo neighbourhood.

Hotel Posada Real de Chiapas. More expensive, but lovely, option, only one block from the zócalo.

VISITING?

LOCATION -- San Cristóbal is located south of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
