| Colima in the Nahuatl language means 'the
place where the old god is dominant.'
In fact, Colima City (elevation: 550 meters, population 130,000)
is located on a huge deposit of debris from "the old god" -
the volcanoes 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) north of the city.
It may not be the most exciting place to be, but Colima City
is one of Mexico's most beautiful colonial cities and it offers
a cooler environment than the coast - which is particularly
advantageous during the summer months. For hikers, this is an
excellent place to base trips to the Nevado
de Colima National Park.
NATURAL WORLD
Extensive coconut palm trees blending perfectly with colonial-style
constructions give Colima its name of the City of Palms.
CULTURE
For archaeology buffs, the Museo de Las Culturas de Occidente
(Museum of Pacific Cultures), located within the Casa de la
Cultura, at the intersection of Calzada Galvan and Ejercito
Nacional has displays of pre-Hispanic ceramics.
Every Thursday and Sunday from from 6-8pm, the State Musical
Band performs in the kiosk of the Jardín Libertad Square.
HISTORY
Colima City has the distinction of being the first colonial
city west of Mexico
City, founded in 1523. |
