| Celaya (elevation 5,772
feet) is known as 'The Golden Door of the Bajío' due to its
economic wealth. Celaya is located in a flat region in the eastern
part of the state. The word Zalaya is of Basque origin and means
'flat land.'
The city was founded on October 12, 1570 and quickly became an
agricultural center. Today the city is the third largest in Guanajuato
with a population of 383,000.
FOOD
Those with a sweet tooth love this city which is famous for its
production of milk candies and cajeta, made with burnt goat milk
and brown sugar.
