GUERRERO -- Veladero National Park is home to the Palma Sola Archaeological Site managed by Mexico's National Anthropology and History Institute (INAH).

Archaeology and nature buffs will treasure this spot with a spectacular view of Acapulco Bay. There are more than 18 stones with multiple carvings. The setting is dry forest ranging from 1,100 to 1,200 feet.

Visitors will spot dozens of designs ranging from anthromorphological to zoomorphological images created by the first settlers in the area, the Yopes. Little is known about this civilization though it is believed they developed this site in the period from 600 BC to 200 AD.

VISITING?

The site is open daily from 10am to 6pm. The park is located 6 kilometers north of downtown Acapulco.

Travel!

TIP -- Allow at least two hours for the excursion. There is a brand new visitor center and the trail leading up the mountain is in great condition. Take water, sun block and a hat. Public buses trudge up the hill to the "Palma Sola" neighborhood. You can also hire a taxi.
