The Mexican government has declared the town one of the country's 'magic villages' or pueblos magicos, indicating the place has significant historical and architectural value.

HISTORY

The name, Tapalpa, comes from the náhuatl word 'Tlapalpan' which means 'the land of colors.' Indigenous residents used minerals to dye their cloth.

NATURAL WORLD

Pine and oak forests, waterfalls and giant rock formations surround the town. The cool, clean air is a treat.

CULTURAL WORLD

Winding cobblestone streets, whitewashed adobe houses and pitched red tile roofs make the city a visual treat and a wonderful place to walk.

Historic attractions include the La Conquista paper factory, the Parish of San Antonio de Tapalpa, the temples of Juanacatlan and Our Lady of Mercy.

NEARBY

Ten kilometers west of town, in a village called 'La Barranca De Refugio, is the Salto de Nogal waterfall which plunges 105 meters. North are outcroppings of volanic rocks, Las Piedrotas and Los Frailes.

Just west of Tapalpa is El Nogal dam and the Salto del Nogal waterfalla. North is Las Piedrotas and Los Frailes.
