PHONE HOME

Most public phones now take calling cards instead of coins. Ladatel calling cards are sold in either 20 or 50 peso denominations. They can be found at various stores, restaurants and automated machines at airports.

Calling other cities in Mexico, use the '01' national code and then the number.

TIPS

To call the United States or Canada from Mexico, dial '001' first and then area code and number. To call other countries, first dial '00.' Call international numbers collect by dialing '090' or national numbers collect by dialing '020.'

When making calls to '800' numbers to the United States, dial '001-880' and the 7-digit number.

If you are calling Mexico from another country, the international code is '52.' For example, the city code for Mexico City is '55.' Thus calling a Mexico City phone number from the United States, you would dial '011-5255' and then the eight digit number.

If you have an account with the following businesses, here are the toll-free numbers:

AT&T: 01-800-288-2872, 001-800-462-4240 and 01-800-112-2020 (Spanish)
MCI: 01-800-021-1000
Sprint: 01-800-877-8000
Teleglobe Canada:01-800-123-0200

More phone numbers:

(20) National long distance via operator
(30) Exact time
(60) Emergencies
(90) National long distance via operator

MAIL SERVICE

Sometimes the service is a bit slow, but the correo is fairly reliable. Cities have post offices as well as international courier services, such as United Parcel Service, Federal Express and DHL.

WHAT TO BUY

What bettter thing to buy at the post office than a postcard? It's like buying a market bag at the market. If you have the time, find the post office, buy a card and take your time writing a short note to a loved one. Buy a stamp and send it right away. Or buy the postcard and hand it out in person. Either way, this stimulates local sales and puts your spin on the places you've been.
