PHOTO GALLERY: Lessons from Mexico

Michoacán borders the states of Colima and Jalisco to the west, Guanajuato and Querétaro to the north, México to the east, Guerrero to the south-east, and the Pacific Ocean to the south.

Michoacán is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the country. Highlights include the colonial city of Morelia and the Monarch Butterfly Reserve.

INDIGENOUS MEXICO

The Purépecha were the original inhabitants.

CRAFTS

16th-century bishop, Vasco de Quiroga, a student of Sir Thomas More's Utopia, encouraged the Purépecha Indians to adopt a specific craft as a means to survival. The village of Santa Clara del Cobre is renowned for its copper products, Capula for its rust-colored pottery and Ihuatzio for woven baskets and mats.
