HISTORY

Morelos was named after José María Morelos, one of the heroes of Mexico's War of Independence.

The state was previously dominated by the Chichimecs and inhabited by the Xochimilca and later the Tlahuica, who founded the settlement of Cuauhnahuac, later changed by the Spaniards into Cuernavaca.
