Morelos is bordered by the Federal District
to the north, the State
of Mexico to the north and west, Puebla
to the east and Guerrero
to the south.
Morelos was named after José María
Morelos, one of the heroes of Mexico's War of Independence.
The state was previously dominated by the Chichimecs and inhabited
by the Xochimilca and later the Tlahuica, who founded the
settlement of Cuauhnahuac, a name later changed by the Spaniards
to Cuernavaca.
CULTURAL WORLD
Keep an eye open for the cuexcomate,
a traditional rural means of storing corn
(maize). They were once quite common but they have been
disappearing.
Savvy educators have made Cuernavaca
one of the most popular centers for learning
Spanish.
