-- Capulálpam de Méndez (elevation: 2,040 meters)
is a town surrounded by mountainous landscapes in Oaxaca's Sierra
Juárez.
In 2008 the Mexican government declared the town one
of the country's 'magic villages' or pueblos
magicos, indicating this place has significant historical and
architectural value.
Capulálpam means 'in the lands of the neighborhood' in
the Náhuatl language of the Aztecs.
TRADITIONAL MEDICINE
The Centro de Medicina Tradiciona employs traditional healers who
provide medical treatment through traditional practices such as medicinal
plant therapy, sobadas (massages), temazcal and herbal baths. They
offer the services of a farmacia herbolaria (herbal pharmacy) and
basic training courses to provide an understanding about a great variety
of plants that are used for their curative powers. The treatment includes
a massage and a limpia (cleansing) with medicinal plants. This purification
is intendd to eliminate the negative energy or 'bad vibrations' from
the body.
NATURE HIKES
El Calvario is a scenic hilltop which offers a terrific view of
the area. On the outskirts of town is the Centro Recreativo Los
Molinos which has zip-line ride (tirolesa) 100 feet over the river.
GARDENS
The city hosts an annual garden competition in May.
HISTORY AND CULTURE
The Church of San Mateo was built at the end of the seventeenth
century and include its wooden roof and wooden altar. The neoclassical
altarpieces are adorned with sculptures and paintings. |
