Entertainment options in the capital run the gamut from listening to marimbas in the zócalo to enjoying a few chelas and botanas in a neighborhood cantina.

Local pubs range from hole in the walls to posh, wannabe utltralounges and anthros. Newer bars have retractable roofs to provide shelter against the rain.

Many bars offer free snacks (botana) given out with the drinks. Foods range from peanuts to soups and hearty meat dishes. Beers (chelas) are sometimes served ice cold, como cola de penguino.

FYI, in Oaxaca beer with lime juice is called a suero. Beer with lime and chile is called a michelada.

BEST PLACES FOR MEZCAL

La Farola, 20 de Noviembre #3, corner of Las Casas. This classic cantina was founded in 1916 and features the brand Rey Zapoteco.

Caminito al Cielo, Prolongación del Panteón #117. Quiet place on the east side of town. The plus - this cantina features mezcal from a master mezcalero from the town of Santa Catarina de Minas, outside Ocotlán.

La Casa del Mezcal, Flores Magon #209. Classic cantina.

LIVE MUSIC

El Nuevo Babel, Porfirio Díaz #224. Rootsy place with live music most nights at 9pm

Candela, Murguía #413 at the corner of Pino Suárez. Live salsa music every night. On Fridays and Saturdays, it's best to arrive before 10:30pm to secure a table. Salsa classes! Night-time cover charge.

MEZCAL

What tequila is to Jalisco, mezcal is to Oaxaca. Choose your favorite -- pechuga, tobalá, and of course, gusano (with worm!). Mezcal is served at all pubs and most restaurants. It's a strong drink and makes a fine after dinner aperitif. MORE

CLEAR YOUR MIND

Locals have a number of recommendations for hangover food that can clear your mind the day after drinking too much. Top choice is pancita (also called menudo) made with tripe.
