MARKET

Market day in Villa de Etla is Wednesday. The Sunday market is also large. Specialties include meats (chorizo, cecina) and cooked dishes including enchiladas, barbacoa and caldo de menudo.

NATURAL WORLD

This is an humid region of the Central Valley. The local swimming pool is the Vista Hermosa Balnario.

ARCHAEOLOGY

Outside Guadalupe Etla, San José El Mogote was once of the most important urban centers in the Americas.

COOKING CLASSES

Seasons of my Heart offers cooking classes in San Lorenzo Cacaotepec, Etla.

SAN AGUSTIN

San Agustín Etla is home to a new cottage industry -- hand-made paper. The town's first paper-making workshop is Taller Arte Papel Oaxaca in Vista Hermosa. Visits are scheduled in the early morning hours at this innovative workshop housed in the ex-hydroelectric plant. More information is available at the Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca.

Another workshop is Papel Oaxaca, which offers courses on paper-making and green-building techniques.

CULTURE

The Centro de Las Artes de San Agustín (CASA) opened in March 2006. Launched by artist Francisco Toledo, who has since left the project, the Centro de Artes has received support from the state and federal government, including Conculta (National Council for Culture and the Arts) and CENART (National Center for the Arts).

Located in the renovated Vista Hermosa textile mill, CASA is an educational center and workshop which aspires toward 'eco-friendly' technologies.
