The 2006 Rural Tourism Fair brought together more than 350 visitors and exhibitors in the the world's largest small event.

The sixth annual event provided dialogue and information-sharing among travelers and locals in Oaxaca City, Mexico. Visitors had direct access to local tour operators, community representatives and artisans.

ABOUT THE FAIR

A small festival among friends, the 2006 Rural Tourism Fair was the sixth annual event co-created by Planeta.com in Oaxaca City. The event took place Saturday, January 28 at Instituto Amigos del Sol.

The fair highlighted rural tourism and brings together local travel providers, community leaders, media, government officials and inspired travelers for a few magical hours. The event showcased options and responsibilities travelers have exploring the rural countryside.



SOBRE LA FERIA

Un pequeño festival entre amigos, la Fería de Turismo Rural 2006 fue el sexto evento anual co-creado por Planeta.com en la Ciudad de Oaxaca. El evento fue Sabado, el 28 de Enero en el Instituto Amigos del Sol.

La feria mostraba turismo rural y reunaba a provedores de servicios turísticos locales, líderes de las comunidades, medios de comunicación, dependencias de gobierno, viajeros inspirados por unas horas mágicas, y mostraba las alternativas y responsibilidades que existen para explorar el paisaje rural.


HIGHLIGHTS

Highlights included an author presentation of Ecoturismo TAP by Jorge Chávez de la Peña, a review of ecotourism in Mexico and South Africa by Gerhard Buttner and a presentation of tourism development in Retalhuleu (Reu), Guatemala.

EXHIBITORS

Exhibitors included a mix of tour operators, artisans, environmental groups and government representatives.

Registered for the event were Bicicletas Pedro Martinez, Casa Sagrada, ConservaOax, Eco Alibrijes, Ecoturismo TAP, Educaventura, Journey Mexico, Manuel Grosselet, Rancho Buenavista, Retalhuleu.info, Salina Blanca, SECTUR Oaxaca, Sherpas Mexicanos, Tamazulapan.com and Traditions Mexico Hands-On Tours.

Featured craft-makers included Josefina Médez López and Angela Mendoza from Teotitlán del Valle.

A directory of exhibitors was distributed at the fair.

DIALOGUE/DIALOGO

Coffee Tourism -- The delegation from Guatemala explained how the national government is promoting diversification of coffee crops and tours to the fincas.

Family Travel in Mexico -- The Educaventura group explained how they offer to tours to children. Guides from several companies agreed that in leading a family tour, attention needs to be first aimed at the kids. "When the kids become bored, the adults have to tend to them." Also, Jorge Chávez described the growing market for senior travel in Mexico.

FOOD

Memorable events have memorable food and drink, preferably local specialties. Our tourism fairs always feature free tamales served in cornhusk wrappers. No extra plates are needed.

FEEDBACK

The fair did draw a critisism -- an elderly Canadian couple were distraught that some of the indigenous exhibitors did not speak English. Otherwise, participants indicated they were pleased with the event.
