HISTORY
Oaxaca City's Sánchez Pascuas Market specializes in
fresh vegetables and fruits, local cheeses, good food and crafts.
The market was founded on September 19, 1972 after being relocated
from the plaza south of the Carmen
Alto Church.
FESTIVALS
The market celebrates the Saint Carmen feast day as well as
the Guelaguetza.
SPECIALTIES
The market has great family own-restaurants (comedores) as
well stands that sell take out. Buy your nopalitos by the bag
or fresh salsa and tortillas.
Among the comedores are Fondas Oaxaqueña, Normita, Lupita,
Nelly, Chonchita and Yolis. Fonda Oaxaqueña serves excellent
embaradas.
In the morning great tamales.
Venders include Tamales Cande. There are also memelas from the
fire-hot comals.
Fresh juices are sold at Jugos Angelita and Jugos Yesena.
Sweets are sold at Postres Regionales Tolita.
On weekends there are houseplants and locally made furniture
for sale.
CRAFTS
In addition to food products, the market also sells traditional
green pottery from Atzompa
(Ruben Enriques Juárez) and weavings from Teotitlán
del Valle (Angela Mendoza).
NATURAL WORLD
A huge laurel tree anchors the plaza on the eastern side of
the market. On the west side is a beautiful flamboyant tree
that blooms in the spring.
MEXICO NEWS
The newspaper stand is located on the western side at the Tinoco
y Palacios entrance.
LOCATION
Located seven blocks north of the Zócalo
between Porfirio Díaz and Tinoco y Palacios streets.
