WHERE TO SEEK TIMELY INFORMATION

Keep an eye on news from Oaxaca.

GENERAL TIPS

PRONOUNCIATION - Oaxaca is pronounced 'Wah-HA-Ca'

PREPARATION - Read one or more books about Mexico before you travel. Also, consider things you can do during your visit.

FOLLOWUP - After your trip, be sure to send locals any pictures or things you have promised. If you want to keep with the news - not to mention your Spanish (!) - browse the online local papers.

FOOD - Learn what makes Oaxacan cuisine unique and plan ahead on where to eat and what to eat.

DAY OF THE DEAD - Oaxaca celebrates Day of the Dead between October 31st and November 2nd.

GUELAGUETZA - Check out the news about the Guelaguetza and your chance of seeing a mini-Guelaguetza.

BARGAINING - Bargaining is part of the traditional purchasing system. That said, pay a fair price and don't spend too much time haggling.

WATER - Oaxaca is an arid environment. Conserve water during your visit. Limiting shower time is a good way to be a responsible traveler.

KIDS - Oaxaca is kid-friendly. Check out the workshops run by Boris Spider and visit the Museo Cri Cri.

CLOTHING - Oaxaca is a conservative place. Think twice about entering churches wearing shorts. If you are walking any distance, flip flops are not that comfortable.

LANGUAGE - Do not underestimate the importance of learning Spanish. Familiarize yourself with español before you arrive. You can also take classes at a local language school. There are a number of indigenous languages spoken.

TOUR GUIDES - Consult our travel directory.

WEATHER - Oaxaca City enjoys a pleasant climate year-round, though the hottest months are April and May. Expect a chance of rain between May and October. The rainiest months are June and July. Check the forecast.

VISITING VILLAGES - Traveling in Mexico requires a sensitivity on the part of travelers to enter the rhythm and customs of the community.

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL - Be a responsible traveler. What is responsible travel? Consult the handbook (pdf).
