MEXICO -- Ocotlán de Morelos (elevation 1,500 meters) is known for its cultural center and for its Friday market.


NATURAL WORLD

Look for the jacaranda trees planted on the road leading into town.


The blue church has a neo-classical facade.


MARKETS

Friday is market day.

CRAFTS

The city has distinctive crafts, including a variety of ceramics that portray celebrations of daily life. The most famous craft-makers are the Aguilar sisters (Josefina, Guillermina, Irene and Concepción).

The traditional pottery is a utilitarian bowl of brown clay.

NEARBY

San Antonino Castillo Velasco produces embroidered dresses using silk and cotton in a detailed fashion that requires several months to complete.

San José del Progresso and San Juan Chilateca are famous for embroidery.

MEZCAL

Ocotlán has numerous places to sample mezcal, Oaxaca's local drink. You'll find a variety of flavors at Hermanos Sanchez Ramirez, Galeana #211.

Six kilometers away is the town of Santa Catarina de Minas, home of the famous white mezcal. Notable mezcaleros include Ishmael Arellanos. Real Minero also produces mezcal in this town.

VISITING?

LOCATION -- Ocotlán is located 33 kilometers south of Oaxaca City.

Travel!

TRANSPORTATION -- From Oaxca City, take the bus from Armenta y Lopez #621or frm Autotransported, Zaragoza and Miguel Cabrera.

There is collective taxi service near the Abastos Market. Look for taxis on Diagonal Mercadores (at the corner of the Periferico Sur).

Drivers, head south on Highway 175 toward Matatlán and Puerto Ángel.
