HISTORY
Its official founding dates to 1928 when it took its names from
rocks in the harbor known to sailors as 'Punta Escondida.'
BEACHES, SURFING AND SWIMMING
Carrizalillo and Manzanillo Beaches are ideal for swimming and
snorkeling. Surfers favor Zicatela Beach where the waves can reach
six meters (18+ feet). An international surfing tournament is held
each year between August and November.
BIRD WATCHING
Bird watchers and nature lovers should visit the local parks. Just
16 kilometers (10 miles) north of town is Laguna
Manialtepec. Further north -- 74 kilometers (46 miles) -- is
Chacahua
Lagoons National Park.
FISHING
Puerto Escondido is one of the best-located places along the Mexican
Pacific Coast for sport fishing.
Trips can be arranged via small fishing boats (pangas) skippered
by knowledgeable captains of the Cooperativa de Pesca Deportiva,
Avenida National Marina. Pangas accommodate up to four people and
most trips depart at dawn and return mid-day.
ENTERTAINMENT
There are numerous musical venues and bars in town. One of the
best is Casa Babylon ... Cinemar, a beautiful small movie theater
has opened across from Zicatela Beach and boasts comfortable seats
and great movies ... Pelota Mixteca is played Saturdays and Sundays
in Chila, 15 minutes north of town on the highway to Acapulco.
