MEXICO -- A 19th-century shipping point for coffee plantations and later 'discovered' by surfers in the 1970's, Puerto Escondido is a relatively new town.

HISTORY

Its official founding dates to 1928 when it took its names from rocks in the harbor known to sailors as 'Punta Escondida.'

BEACHES, SURFING AND SWIMMING

Carrizalillo and Manzanillo Beaches are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Surfers favor Zicatela Beach where the waves can reach six meters (18+ feet). An international surfing tournament is held each year between August and November.

BIRD WATCHING

Bird watchers and nature lovers should visit the local parks. Just 16 kilometers (10 miles) north of town is Laguna Manialtepec. Further north -- 74 kilometers (46 miles) -- is Chacahua Lagoons National Park.

FISHING

Puerto Escondido is one of the best-located places along the Mexican Pacific Coast for sport fishing.

Trips can be arranged via small fishing boats (pangas) skippered by knowledgeable captains of the Cooperativa de Pesca Deportiva, Avenida National Marina. Pangas accommodate up to four people and most trips depart at dawn and return mid-day.

ENTERTAINMENT

There are numerous musical venues and bars in town. One of the best is Casa Babylon ... Cinemar, a beautiful small movie theater has opened across from Zicatela Beach and boasts comfortable seats and great movies ... Pelota Mixteca is played Saturdays and Sundays in Chila, 15 minutes north of town on the highway to Acapulco.
