ARTESANIA
Every day town artisans gather on the central square
to sell their work. Leaders from the town committee take turns managing
sales at the Mercado de Artesania. You'll find rugs, shoulder bags
(morales)
and other textiles.
In town there are many family-run
workshops.
CULTURAL LANDSCAPE
COMMUNITY MUSEUM -- Also located on the town plaza, the
Shan-Dany Community Museum is the oldest of its kind in Oaxaca.
One of the reasons the museum was created was to keep archaeological
finds in town -- the alternative would have been to send the pieces
to the state capital or Mexico
City.
The museum has four small exhibits, focusing on archaeology, the
Mexican Revolution the traditional Danza de la Pluma (Feather Dance)
and local textiles. The museum is open daily from 10am to 2pm and
from 3pm to 6pm. There is a 10 peso admission charge.
RELIGIOUS MUSEUM -- The newest museum
is town is dedicated to the spiritual life. Located in the atrium
of the chuch, the religious museum is open 8am-10am and from 5pm
to 8pm.
TOWN MARKET -- The town market is
open in the mornings.
CHILDREN'S MUSEUM -- The Museo del Niño
is open from 10am-2pm and from 4pm-6pm.
FIESTAS
January 13-17 - Fiesta de Esquipulas
Second week of August - largest festival of the year!
All of the town festivals are celebrated with calendas
and presentations of the Danza de la Pluma. There are also basketball
tournaments and rodeo (jaripeo).
