Santa Ana del Valle is a Zapotec community that preserves its native language and traditions. Town leaders created one of the best-managed community museums in the region and there are plenty of opportunities for horseback rides and guided walks.

NATURAL WORLD

This is an arid region at the eastern end of the Central Valley and at the foothills of the Sierra Juárez. Travelers wishing a guided walk or bike rental should inquire about these services at the Community Museum.

ARTESANIA

Every day town artisans gather on the central square to sell their work. Leaders from the town committee take turns managing sales at the Mercado de Artesania. You'll find rugs, shoulder bags (morales) and other textiles.

In town there are many family-run workshops.

CULTURAL LANDSCAPE

COMMUNITY MUSEUM -- Also located on the town plaza, the Shan-Dany Community Museum is the oldest of its kind in Oaxaca. One of the reasons the museum was created was to keep archaeological finds in town -- the alternative would have been to send the pieces to the state capital or Mexico City.

The museum has four small exhibits, focusing on archaeology, the Mexican Revolution the traditional Danza de la Pluma (Feather Dance) and local textiles. The museum is open daily from 10am to 2pm and from 3pm to 6pm. There is a 10 peso admission charge.

RELIGIOUS MUSEUM -- The newest museum is town is dedicated to the spiritual life. Located in the atrium of the chuch, the religious museum is open 8am-10am and from 5pm to 8pm.

TOWN MARKET -- The town market is open in the mornings.

CHILDREN'S MUSEUM -- The Museo del Niño is open from 10am-2pm and from 4pm-6pm.

FIESTAS
