OAXACA -- Oaxaca's Sierra Juárez boasts a wealth of natural and cultural diversity. Locals call this mountainous region by its proper name, named after Mexico's illustrious President Benito Juárez.

In the past few years the communities have developed hiking trails, cabins and camping sites. As of 2007, there were more than one hundred beds available in cabins and family posadas in the region.

NATURE AND CULTURE

From the tropical deciduous forests to arid ecosystems, the Sierra Juárez region has what biologists call high endemism. Visitors can trek through diverse pine and oak forests.

Hiking to summits of these mountains, you will find sub alpine prairies. At 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) Zempoaltépetl is the sacred mountain of the Mixe.

FOOD

Atole colorado is a specialty warm beverage, flavored with chocolate, corn and achiote.

PUEBLOS MANCOMUNADOS

Nearly a dozen communities form the Pueblos Mancomunados including Benito Juárez, San Antonio Cuajimoloyas, Llano Grande, Latuví, Amatlán, Santa Catarina Lachatao and Yavesia.

OTHER VILLAGES

Other villages include Ixtlán de Juárez, Santa Catarina Ixtepeji and Guelatao.
