| Llocated on the Papaloapan plains, just
270 feet above sea level in the Isthmus
of Tehuantepec, the town of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec shares
its name with the Isthmus.
Here only 200 kilometers (125 miles) of land separate the Gulf
of Mexico with the Gulf of Tehuantepec and the Pacific Ocean.
NATURAL WORLD
Prepare for hot weather ... and plenty of rain in the summer.
HISTORY
Archaeologists have uncovered pieces dating to 4000 BC. This region
was home to the Olmec
and later the Mixes and Huaves.
By 1400 AD the Zapotecs
commanded the region and established a fortress at Guiengola. The
site is located 10 miles west of town.
CULTURE
Women wear bright dresses.
The city holds its annual fair every June. Also, be aware that
this is the home of Oaxaca's famous 'pineapple dance.'
A statue of Máximo Ramón Ortiz, composer of the zandunga,
stands in the plaza.
The city is an important agro-industrial center.
