| The state of Sonora is located in northwest
Mexico, bordered by Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Arizona to the north
and the Sea
of Cortez to the west. The landscape includes beaches, lush
valleys, majestic mountains and arid deserts, all part of the
Sierra Madre Occidental.
INDIGENOUS LAND
The land is inhabited by numerous indigenous groups, including
the Yaquis, Mayos, Primas, Pápagos, Opatos, Seris and
Guarijíos, who still preserve their ancestors' folkloric
customs and traditions found throughout the state.

BANAMICHI
Banámichi, a two-hour drive northeast from Hermosillo,
was founded in 1639 by Jesuit missionaries. Its name comes from
the Opata indigenous language and means, 'Where it gives to
return the water.'
