Tampico is a warm, friendly port city with
an unusual urban landscape. As Jerry Mills points out, Tampico
has many subtle
delights.
HISTORY
The name 'Tampico' is believed to be of Huastec origin: tam-piko,
meaning 'place of otters,' (literally 'water dog').
Tampico was founded on April 12, 1823 as Santa Ana de Tampico,
although Spanish settlers founded an earlier settlement, known
as Tampico Alto, in 1554.
NATURAL WORLD
Located on the Panuco
River that flows from the River Moctezuma in the Valley
of Mexico to the Gulf, Tampico is the second most important
port in the country. Oil is the largest export.
METROPOLIS
Tampico is linked with Almira to the north and Ciudad Madero
to the south.
CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS
Tampico's historic center is an ecclectic mixture of style.
The prevalence of New
Orleans-style architecture is attributed to the early years
of the city, when many building supplies, including pre-built
housing components, were shipped to the area.
TOURISM
In 1921 Mexican commercial aviation started here, as its first
flight, by Mexicana de Aviación, took off from Tampico's
General Francisco Javier Mina International Airport to Mexico
City International Airport.
BEACHES
Miramar Beach is the north of the city.
CUISINE
Local specialties include crayfish with huitlacoche (corn mushroom)
and squash flower stuffing, sea bass wrapped in paper with chimichurri
sauce, black mole (spicy Mexican sauce) with tamarind and lorencillo
sea bass.
