RUGBY
Rugby
is New Zealand's national passion. New Zealand won the bid for the
Rugby
World Cup 2011 and matches will be held at 11 venues around
the country. It is estimated that 66,000 plus visitors will travel
to New Zealand for the event.
Located on the North
Island in Palmerston North, the New
Zealand Rugby Museum is the oldest museum in the world devoted
to the oval ball. It contains New Zealand's most comprehensive collection
of rugby memorabilia and records, including some of the world's
rarest rugby artefacts. The extensive photo library documents the
emergence of New Zealand as a rugby power.
New Zealand's world dominance of the game began in 1905, when the
first All Blacks team swept victoriously through Europe. The strength
of the game remains local as NZ teams compete for prestigious trophies
known little else in the world such as the Ranfurly
Shield.

BUNGEE
Queenstown is the home of bungee jumping. The sport did not originate
here (it all started on nearby Vanuatu),
it was popularized by New Zealand entrepreneur AJ
Hackett who opened the world's first commercial bungy site in
1988. The Nevis Highwire Bungy, a 134-meter drop from a suspended
platform, is the highest bungee
jump in the Southern Hemisphere. Jump in!

TRIVIA
New Zealand referee William Atack was the first to use a whistle
to stop a game of sport in 1884. Where his contemporaries used their
voice, Atack used the dog whistle as a means of control.
