TRANSPORTATION

New Zealand is a three and a half hour flight from Eastern Australia. From the West Coast of the United States, a direct flight to New Zealand takes about 12 hours. From other places on the Pacific Rim, such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo, flights take around 10 hours.

AIRLINES

New Zealand’s international airports transport millions of people every year. The country is served by international carriers and its own airline, Air New Zealand.

b TranzScenic

The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From your carriage you’ll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the Southern Alps before descending through lush beech rain forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth, a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the popular glaciers.

An open air viewing carriage allows you to get even closer to the stunning scenery and provides many opportunities to photograph favorite spots. The trip is 223.8 kilometers long and takes just four and a half hours. There are 16 tunnels, and 5 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase rising 73 meters.

ON THE ROAD

New Zealanders drive on the left-hand side of the road. Drivers give way (or yield) to all traffic crossing or approaching from the right. Bus stops are on the left-hand side of the road.

You can legally drive in New Zealand for up to 12 months if you have either a current driver's licence from your home country or an International Driving Permit (IDP).
