The name Otago anglicises the Kai Tahu Mañori dialect name
'Otakou.'

TREKS
Developed for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, the Otago
Central Rail Trail follows the former Otago Central branch railway
line for 150 kilometers from Middlemarch to Clyde. There is no charge
although donations can be made to the OCRT Trust.
WHALES
The village of Otakou on the Otago Peninsula served as a whaling
base during early years of European economic interest in the east
coast of Murihiku around 1840.
UNIVERSITIES
New Zealand's first university, The
University of Otago, was founded in 1869 in Dunedin.
