| Stewart Island is separated from the South
Island by the Foveaux Strait. More than 85 percent of the island
is protected with the creation of Rakiura
National Park.
The Maori call this island Rakiura ('The Land of Glowing Skies.')
Nearby Ulva Island is famous for its birdwatching. Located in the
Whaka o Te Were (Paterson Inlet) the predator-free sanctuary abounds
in birdlife.
Stewart Island/Rakiura is the third-largest island of New Zealand.
Its permanent population is slightly fewer than 400 people, most
of whom live in Oban.
