| CJ , aka citizen journalism, describes
the way in which citizens play an active role in collecting,
reporting and distributing news and information. We are entering
the world of great ideas and nerdy definitions. Like other cutting-edge
terms, 'citizen journalism' is not universally accepted. It's
a term that can be interchanged with 'user-generated content.'
NEW MEDIA
Such journalism by any name is becoming accepted. Those of
us who were new to blogging
years ago are being joined by our colleagues.
When legal structures prevent the formation of daily newspapers,
radio or television stations, individuals are taking up their
issues with a passion online.
That said, what are the rules?
TIME
"Look at 2006 through a different lens and you'll see
another story, one that isn't about conflict or great men. It's
a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen
before. It's about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia
and the million-channel people's network YouTube and the online
metropolis MySpace. It's about the many wresting power from
the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will
not only change the world, but also change the way the world
changes."

TRAFFIC
Say the manager of a collective blog: "I like the sharing
of opposite points of view. Please bust my chops whenever you
want. Controversy drives traffic and is good for the site."
