LATIN AMERICA IN THE NEWS
The time has come to ask whether we are satisfied with how
the mainstream media covers international news. Are we satisfied
with Survivor:
Guatemala or Wild
On: Costa Rica?
Check out Vanishing
Point and see how Latin America (and other 'developing'
points on the globe) are treated by mass media.
LAMP
In 2003 we created the Latin
America Media Project (LAMP) which encourages members
and supporters to work toward expanding
the paying market for news that makes us better aware of the
changes occurring in the region.
LAMP highlights
coverage that illuminates the region. Check out member
sites and industry leaders, including BrazilMax, EcoAmericas
and Mexico Connect. LAMP also links to innovative features such
as EchoRadio's Junglecasts.
Improving the quality, accuracy and visibility of regional
reporting is linked to maintaining and expanding the market.
And that is not so easy.
Ten years ago I worked as a full-time reporter on the U.S.-Mexico
border. Unfortunately, there was little interest in paid
coverage of the region. This surprised me given the amount of
interest in that narrow strip of space prior to NAFTA.
What I learned is summarized in the essays Digesting
Borderland Environmental News and Por
un nuevo periodismo ambiental en la zona fronteriza.
FORUM
Writing in the Water
topic, one writer reported massive amounts of garbage in Mexico's
Sumidero
Canyon. Most of Mexico's national papers covered the scandal
a week later and the story was featured on television networks.
