and important port on the Pacific Ocean, located in a dry tropical
forest with an average annual temperature of 25 degrees Celsius
(77° F).
GEOGRAPHY
Manta is located in the Manabí Province
on the Pacific coast. It is the most populated city in the province,
the fifth most populated in the country and, economically, Ecuador's
third most important city.
Manta has the largest seaport in the country.
INDIGENOUS HISTORY
Manta was a trading post for the Mantas and the
Incans.
CURRENT
Since 1999 Manta has been used as a military
location for U.S. air forces in conjunction with Ecuador for
supporting anti-narcotics military operations.
NATURAL WORLD
Popular beaches include El Murciélago,
San Lorenzo and Barbasquillo. Surfers often travel to San Lorenzo
to find powerful waves.
