Manta is
a picturesque and important port on the Pacific Ocean, located
in a dry tropical forest with an average annual temperature
of 25 degrees Celsius (77° F).
GEOGRAPHY
Manta is located in the Manabí Province
on the Pacific coast. It is the most populated city in the province,
the fifth most populated in the country and, economically, Ecuador's
third most important city. Manta has the largest seaport in
the country.
INDIGENOUS HISTORY
Manta was a trading post for the Mantas and the
Incans.
NATURAL WORLD
Popular beaches include El Murciélago,
San Lorenzo and Barbasquillo. Surfers often travel to San Lorenzo
to find powerful waves.
HEADLINES
The Foreign Ministry has informed the United
States that the U.S. military must stop using the base when
Washington's 10-year lease on the base in Ecuador expires in
2009.
