NATURAL WORLD

Quito (elevation: 2,800 meters or 9,186 feet) lies at the heart of the Avenue of Volcanoes, the two parallel lines of volcanoes which run along the Andes. Quito is almost twice the height of mile-high Denver. The city is known for its warm days and chilly nights.

CITY PARKS

Parque Carolina is one of the most popular urban parks in the entire country. Located in the northern part of Quito, the park used to be the city's airport. Facilities include soccer fields, basketball courts and plenty of volleyball. Paddle boats are for rent on a small pond.

Metropolitan Park is said to be the largest urban park in all of South America. Located in northern Quito behind the Atahualpa Olympic Stadium, the park is great for walking, running and mountain biking. Climb for a good view of Cotopaxi.

El Ejido is a small park located between the Old and New Towns. Crafts are sold on weekends.

SPORTS

Atahualpa Olympic Stadium is the major venue for futbol.

CYLING

Check out the work of BiciAcción.

TELEFERIQO

The Telefériqo cable car is located on the city's western fringes, climbing the flanks of the massive Pichincha Volcano from 3,000 up to 4,000 meters. On clear days the panorama includes at least four snow-covered peaks and dozens of lesser volcanoes. The Teleferiqo complex includes cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops, as well as a large amusement park.

ENTERTAINMENT

There are numerous bars, but few with live music. Quito has two popular pubs -- Reina Victoria, 530 Reina Victoria y Roca and Turtles Head, La Nina. Reina Victoria is the oldest and is a great information hub.
