Making the most of the Re-Imagining South America Conference

Note from the moderator: Online conferences are new to all of us. Whether you are a complete novice or simply new to the Planeta.com conference format, please take a few minutes to review the following practical advice that will assist you in making the most of this conference.

Colibri 1) Be prepared to be surprised.

2) Register for the conference and let your friends and colleagues know about this event.

3) What you get out of the conference will be what you put into it, so make time available. You can continue with business as usual, but be sure to log in at least twice a day during the event. Pre-conference registration will take a few hours.

4) Review some of the references and take a look at the archives.

5) The key word is "Participate." Don't lurk! The first message you should send is an introduction to your work in the field of Mexican ecotourism. Guidelines for participation are online the conference home page. By actively participating, you will get the most out of the individual forums. At traditional conferences, you are noticed by your physical presence alone. We need to hear from you! The conference runs from November 20-30, 2000.

6) Network. Because the conference is virtual, you can browse messages, participate in online chats and contact other participant via private email. Develop a network of professional colleagues who can help you get the work done that motivates you and find ways of linking into other people's work.

7) Send appropriate messages. Stick to the topic of the forum. Also, while digression is expected, be sure to post an introduction, a status report and -- if you are motivated -- some specific proposals. These elements will make up the majority of the summary report that will be generated after the conference concludes.

8) If you have any questions or problems, don't panic.
