Re-Imagining South America Ecotourism Conference

In order to facilitate the networking of professionals working to improve ecotourism in South America, Planeta.com reconvenes the Re-Imagining South America Ecotourism Conference which originally took place in November 2000. The conference resumes the last week of September to commemorate World Tourism Day during the International Year of Ecotourism. One of the products of will be a review of official tourism portals' coverage of ecotourism on a country-by-country basis. We continue to forward messages from our individual South America forums (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela) to this conference.
The original conference took place in November 2000. This event resumes from time to time as part of our larger Reimagining Ecotourism in the Americas Conference.

In order to facilitate the networking of professionals working to improve ecotourism in South America, Planeta.com hosted the Re-Imagining South America Ecotourism Conference which took place in November 2000.

Ecotourism (see our definitions page) is a novel means by which tourism can benefit local communities and the environment. While this is a model form of sustainable development, it is also plagued with pitfalls. This conference will examine both the problems and the promises of ecotourism in South America.

The Re-Imagining South America Ecotourism Conference took advantage of the synergies among professionals, particularly among local operators, officials, travel writers and agents who work in South America.

Registering For This Conference

Registration remains open. Send a blank email to reimagining_south_america-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and you will automatically be subscribed. You can also register by visiting the conference archives online Yahoo Groups: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/reimagining_south_america. Remember -- conferencing took place in November 2000 and resumed in September 2002 in our hemispheric Reimagining Ecotourism in the Americas Conference.

A word about the conference format

The conference is open to professionals (from the tourism industry, government, journalism or academic fields) with at least two years of experience. Participants are asked to introduce themselves, discuss current practices and develop creative strategies. Messages in English or Spanish are welcome. Posts will be moderated to avoid repetition and to keep the conference on topic (focusing on South American ecotourism).

Conference Program

November 20, 2000 - Conference begins. Post and read introductions.

November 21-23 Participants should continue to post introductions, begin networking. Status reports are welcome.

November 25 - Post and discuss specific proposals.

November 30 - Conference concludes.
