It seems we expect a lot from travel and tourism these days: for it to be responsible and to be eco ... to alleviate poverty and preserve habitat ... to be carbon neutral and respectful of indigenous people. The list goes on and on!

DESIRE PATHS

Used in landscape architecture, desire paths describe the path worn into the ground that deviate from the planned walkways by people finding the shortest distance between two points.

A desire path could be a short cut through waste ground, across the corner of a civic garden or down an embankment. They were expressions of free will, 'paths with a passion', an alternative to the strictures of railings, fences and walls that turned individuals into powerless apathetic automatons. On desire paths you could break out, explore, feel your way across the landscape.

NGOs

Short for 'Non Governmental Organizations' -- the question is how apt is the term if the organization is headed by a former government employee or if the "NGO" serves as stepping stone to government office? Another term "civil society" is also dubious and much of the "society" is not very civil with one another.
