Governments continue to learn how to present responsible travel
and ecotourism to their own travel providers and to the world.
The idea behind the value chain is that there are number of
stakeholders,
aka players involved and governments play a critical role.
We've often talked about the virtuous
circle and there's no doubt that the virtuous circle begins
with virtuous government. When the government can be of assistance
rather than an obstacle, there are much better opportunities
for conscious, responsible travel to flourish.
BIG PICTURE
Toward the creation of broader constituencies in favor of ecotourism
and responsible tourism, we suggest that governments:
1) Create informative, content-rich websites with timely and
accurate information, including direct links to local operations.
2) Participate in conversations with locals
and visitors via the social
web and face-to-face
meetings.
COMMENTS
Government has an obligation to create the environment in which
tourism can work - 'an enabling environment' - its job should
not be to become the the tourism provider.
