Ecotourism Certification Workshop Summary
http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/tour/certsummary.html
- In January 2001, Planeta.com hosted its most successful conference that set the tone for the rest of the year. We had 300 people from around the globe begin a serious discussion of the pros and cons of "certification" in the tourism industry. This discussion has been frank and the most varied gathering of players discussing the merits of certification. Mind you, the summary is not for everyone. But if you are a journalist or a policy wonk, you'll find this one of the must-reads of the year.

- Our latest news item... the launch of a collaborative online network focusing on improving journalism coverage and a basic understanding of Mexico
When Planeta.com debuted in 1994, I had no idea what was being created. This is in large part due to you -- the Readers. I had no idea that the Directory of Spanish Language Schools would become the single-most popular page on the site, nor that my ecotourism articles would be cited so often.
While the quarterly newsletter is gone, we have instead a content-rich website which is added to and updated on a regular basis. I am very pleased by how often the materials from the site are copied, distributed and incorporated into education. From the simple "How to write a media release" to "Choosing an Eco Tour" -- these virtual pages have been forwarded, printed, faxed around the world.
We are reader and author friendly -- most recently demonstrated during the Media, Environment and Tourism Conference. While Planeta.com doesn't pay for features, we do put writers in touch with each other and with the public in a way most generic magazine/feature websites don't.
Each year I say that we have outdone ourselves putting some of the most interesting, and yes - a bit eclectic -- features online. This year is no exception. I say "we" because while Planeta.com is a one-man operation, the site wouldn't exist without the kind contributions of so many.
What's next? This is the heralded "International Year of Ecotourism" after all! As I remind friends and colleagues, we are making the rules as we go along. Ecotourism, like Internet publishing, evolves by what we do and what we decide not to do. Yes, there are ethics involved. And there is also a great deal of fun.
Readers, Planeta.com invites you to participate in our online forums http://www.planeta.com/worldforum.html, to choose travel companies http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/resources/resources.html or a good book http://www.planeta.com/ecotravel/reviews/reviews.html.
