MEXICO - Planeta.com and Uncovering Mexico conducted an online, bilingual survey which asked readers to choose the favorite town plaza -- zócalo. Here are the preliminary results generated from 48 respondents collected from November 2006-November 2007.

Patzcuaro and Oaxaca City lead the survey. Respondents show a preference for green spaces with a place to sit that are inviting to locals and visitors.

What attributes do you consider important for being a friendly zócalo?

Clean and organized.

The presence if people of all ages, abundant seating, water or greenery for distraction ... And safety.

Greenery, well planned walking areas, access to cafes, attractive bandstands, live music, welcoming seating areas

Greenery, outdoor terraces, artisans sell the hand made crafts, venders food & juices & water stands, live music, fountains, the people of the town

Seguridad, limpieza, alumbrado

Lots of townspeople socializing, places to sit and eat and drink, places to buy snacks, lots of open business establishments.

Greenery, flowers, music, families. Control of drinking and hooligans

Green, many trees, place to sit, restaurants

Tener vida, como arboles, jardines, musica y gente

Availability of knock-off sunglasses

There needs to be some greenery, coffee shops, souvenir shops.

A variety of people and businesses both around and within short walking distance

Pedestrian friendly, tranquil, a place for locals and tourists to come together and share a space.

Size is important, too. Too large, and it makes you feel a bit agoraphobic. Too small, and I guess it's not really a zócalo. A bandstand helps!

Cleanliness, places to sit both in the shade or in the sun, a variety of food available, welcoming to locals, lack of noise from trucks

Relaxed atmosphere. Clean. Many benches or low walls. Way to escape from over-insistent vendors. Fountains. Colonial architecture.

Greenery, vendors, places to sit

Trees, lots of locals, limited traffic, a choice of reasonable cafes, regular everyday usage by the local community and constant usage for events and special occasions.

For greenery we really enjoy the canopy of fig trees shading the walk around El Jardin in Guanajuato.

Having trees, some garden and fountain, music kiosk and comfortable benches

Plenty of shade trees, well-thought-out seating, attractive kiosk, sculpture and other public art

Separation from auto traffic

It is important to see locals enjoying a zocalo. Green spaces are much appreciated as are concerts and local cultural exhibitions. Venders selling handicrafts are welcome as are sales of toys and amusements for the kids. If changes are to be made -- as in the case of the 2005 Oaxaca renovation -- it would be good to see models displayed on site.
