| The 2009 Responsible Tourism Conference
has been postponed until October 2009.
Writing in the Planeta
Forum, Kenrick Theus, Director of the International Centre
for Responsible Tourism-Belize: "Today it is clear that
with many countries having banned all but essential travel to
Mexico and the government of Belize having banned public meetings
we have no choice but to postpone the conference to a date later
in the year. No confirmed cases have been detected in Belize
to date however regional authorities, the local government and
the Belize Ministry of Health are currently engaged in precautionary
measures to abate the spread of virus."
The event was scheduled to take place later this month in Belmopan,
Belize.
"Given the current situation, postponing the conference
makes sense," said Planeta.com's Ron
Mader, an invited speaker. "In difficult situations,
some good always comes out. We'll all be better organized and
better prepared to make the most of the event."
Mader was invited to give an opening address on how to best
use the Web as a tool to connect locals and visitors. The working
draft of his presentation is already online. Storytelling
Now, has already proved to be a popular feature online,
racking up more than 2,000 views on Slideshare.
"Everyone wants to be able to communicate their story
and Web 2.0
in particular provides an array of tools that we had not imagined
a few years ago," Mader said. "Belize has quite a
story to share with the world and we look forward to learning
more about responsible tourism initiatives around the world."
