Planeta.com asked readers to share their thoughts about how swine flu is or is not affecting businesses and travel plans. We made a special request of tourism business owners to share how they perceive the situation. This story was also picked up on Google News. Here are the responses from May 2009.

RESPONSES

  • How much of this is media hype and how much is truly a factor to consider when traveling? This is not an easy call, especially when you have children.
  • Working with foreign tourist the news they hear is alarming and it keeps them distant, postponing trips.
  • We operate a Spanish school in Puebla, Mexico. We've had 100% cancellations for students coming during the next three weeks. I believe this health threat is real and that the government is not overreacting by the precautionary measures it is taking. It is better to slow things way down and tackle this monster before it gets out of control, even if that means lost business and lower income for the short term.
  • I am watching progress daily, however, and am not planning on booking any trips outside Europe in the next few months. I do fear this potential pandemic will have a drastic impact on tourism.
  • It's affecting my business. It will be bad for book orders and sales.
  • I would not be fearful to travel to Mexico City or other destinations in Mexico or to New York or California for that matter. I believe this 'crisis' is all blown out of proportion by the media. Of course, there is a flu going around and if you are not healthy to begin with, it could cause death if you don't seek treatment.
  • As a tour operator, there has been a series of cancellations since last week for coming tours in May, June and on.
  • International airlines are canceling their flights to Mexico. Occupation rate in hotels has dropped to 8%.
  • Students are canceling their spring and putting summer registrations on hold until they know more about how and if the flu will grow.
