Rugby World Cup Links Cultures in New Zealand

RUGBY 2011 WIKI

Publication Date: September 2011

Rugby World Cup 2011 App

FLICKR ALBUM: NZ on the Web

In September the 2011 Rugby World Cup begins in New Zealand. Good thing we have the app!

New Zealand is also known as Aotearoa, its Maori name meaning "the country of the long white cloud." More than one third of the country is made up of protected parkland and marine reserves. The rest of the country appears to be rugby pitches.

Planeta's RWC 2011 Wiki examines how the the world's third largest sporting event is organized, with a particular point of view of the games' economic, environmental and cultural impact. The event links local and global cultures in a manner best described as awesome.

In September and October we will track how RWC2011 integrates the indigenous Maori culture and how the event showcases local tourism options throughout the country. We'd love to hear stories of manaakitanga in action! We will document the use of Web 2.0 as a means to connect locals and visitors alike. Comments are welcome on Ron's blog.

A few media recommendations:

For sport, listen live to … Radio Sport!

For a broader overview of Kiwiland, Radio NZ is New Zealand's national radio broadcaster as well as the international broadcaster to the South Pacific. You can find an amazing array of podcasts faves including Mediawatch and Te Ahi Kaa which features Maori culture

Recommended Viewing

Check out Maori Television, home of the games and the best reality TV show I've seen called Bring Your Boots Oz in which former All Black and strumming guitar hero Glen Osborne visits teammates with whakapapa connections. There are equal amounts of footage of food and footy and a fun mix of English and Maori language.

Travel Suggestions

If you are visiting New Zealand, please check out the tours offered from friends TIME Unlimited Tours and Te Urewera Treks. You'll also find tips from our favorite Kiwi in England, Chris Hill of Hands Up Holidays.

Last week I had the chance to cross the 17-hour time difference in a skype chat with Te Urewera's Joe Doherty:
