El Planeta Platica (The Earth Speaks):
Eco Travels in the Americas
ISSN 1089-8395
Volume 4, Number 1
Off the Beaten Track in Mexico
February 1997

Perhaps no other country in the world is as friendly to tourists as Mexico. The country has an excellent system of transportation, tens of thousands of hotel rooms and a cuisine that is world famous. In scientific literature, such as the ground-breaking 1993 Biological Diversity of Mexico, the nation is cited for its megadiversity (read: "wild things").

Environmental awareness is following in the footsteps of such scientific studies, and tourism providers are discovering the accompanying economic benefits of offering natural history tours. And communities are seeing that "ecotourism" offers the potential to diversify their income base. This adventure, like so many others, is just beginning.

For El Planeta Platica, this is another circle around the sun and year number four of publication! At first, I wondered how many people might be interested in such a narrow topic (environmental tourism in Latin America?) But the website now receives 1,000 page hits per day! Read through the issue, and if you have comments or suggestions, please contact us.
