La Ceiba's Tropical Butterfly Farm and Gardens
by Robert Gallardo

La Ceiba, Honduras - The newest attraction is not just a place to stop by and visit, but a destination in itself. Here you can lose yourself amidst the brillant hues of the hundreds of live butterflies on display, relax in a swimming hole, take a stroll through the jungle, birdwatch and much more.

The farm, which is located at the edge of Pico Bonito National Park, encompasses 50 acres and is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Upon arrival one receives a guided tour through the butterfly farm. Inside the 2400 square foot Butterfly House, one can take pictures of the many varieties of butterflies such as "Owls", Morphos and "longwings" as they feed. One can also rest by the waterfall or stream on a bench amongst tropical plants such as orchids, passion vines and caladiums.

Next, one visits the Caterpillar House, where larvae are reared to their pupae stage and are then shipped to butterfly houses all over the world. Inside one has the opportunity to touch larvae that are over 6 inches long and see butterflies hatch.

Other activities include birdwatching on trails through the jungle where over 160 species have been recorded, including the Ornate and Black and White Hawk Eagle, Royal Flycatcher and Manakins.

Future plans include hummingbird aviary, camping area, guest cabins, orchid and fern garden, gift shop, eatery, picnic area, playground and overnight hiking trails.

To get there go 12 kilometers west of La Ceiba until reaching the pineapple fields and follow the sign to the farm.
