Public Roundtable and Workshop: April 15, 1999

MEXICO CITY - On Thursday, April 15th more than a dozen people attended an informal lunch/gathering at La Casa de las Sirenas restaurant in the Centro Historico to discuss ecotourism in Mexico.

The primary goal of this gathering was to improve the network of contacts in Mexico City (DF) who are working in this field in the belief that such knowledge can build trust needed to assist the development and understanding of ecotourism in Mexico. The meeting was held not to form a new organization to but to shed light on personal initiatives and groups that already exist.

I invited friends, colleages and contributors to the Planeta.com website. This was a wonderful experience in getting people together who have been corresponding via email or phone, but hadn't had the chance to meet in person. The concept is based on similar meetings I convened in Austin, Texas a few years ago.

Each person spoke for about five minutes and introduced themselves, their interests in ecotourism and what they would like to do. Issues discussed included urban reforestation, educational training, media coverage, marketing and promotion, local community participation and recent legislation.

Among the participants at the April 15th forum were:

Announcements were made regarding the upcoming ecotourism course at UNAM, the Expo Aventura y Ecoturismo fair at the Mexico City's World Trade Center (see http://www.tradex.com.mx) July 1-3.
